Johnathan Reilly

Johnathan discussed how personal work is important in getting jobs during his lecture. He talked about how it enables the employer to clearly see what your skill level is and what your work pipeline and efficiency is like. As I started thinking about this it became more apparent on how important it is as whilst in university you can prove what is your work and what isn’t when you are working on a group project. So if you do personal work you can prove what is and isn’t your work and how good it is.

He also pressed that when doing personal work you should always push yourself to do better work as much as you can, this means getting faster at completing projects, getting more skilled at the detail of work and being able to do a wide range of roles.

In the same essence of pushing your personal work to better standards Johnathan also talked about having the same approach to your professional work, meaning that you should always keep pushing yourself to try new aspects of the industry, to keep doing better work and to keep moving up the chain to get higher or more prestigious work.

Whilst talking about the personal work aspect and pushing your professional work as much as you can Johnathan talked about the drawbacks of being so dedicated and committed to your work. The drawbacks included very little social time, hard work, tiring hours, hard to balance work and family life. All this adds up to it being a very demanding and challenging path to take and if you aren’t cut out for it, it can cause you to lose passion for the job. It is a difficult balance to get the drive and push to improve and yet still retain the passion and love for the job without burning out.
